Foundation
The spine position at the base of the pyramid — the footing a whole life is built on.
Foundation is the position a life is built on. In the Balance Pyramid it sits at the foot of the central spine, at the centre of the base — the footing the rest of the structure rests on. Its role is structural: where other positions name a particular strength, task, or facet of a person, Foundation is the part that has to be solid for everything above it to hold. It is the ground, not the view from the top.
It is one of the five positions on the pyramid’s central spine — the vertical line that runs from this base up to the Mission at the apex. The spine traces how a design unfolds across the seasons of a life rather than how a person divides between an inner and an outer side; the life-phase page follows that unfolding, and the Balance Pyramid shows where the spine sits in the figure as a whole.
Because it lies on the spine, Foundation is unpaired. The positions on the inner and material axes mirror one another in pairs, each inner facet answered by an outer one; the spine positions stand alone on the centre line, aligned to neither side. How that pairing works across the rest of the pyramid is set out on the axes and pairs page.
Like every position, Foundation holds one of the twenty-two energies — which one lands here is read from a person’s own pyramid. It is one of the twenty-one positions that together form the full structure.
